The Bike:
- Kawasaki KLR 650 - (2005 with 59,000 KMs as of June 2008)
- A variety of modifications including Penta exhaust, T-mod, chain tensioner upgrade, and more
- Carb rebuilt at 58,000K due to poor idle performance (MASSIVE improvement)
- Throttle closing cable is worn to a thin thread - new one is on order from the USA - (there isn’t a single cable for sale in all of South Africa - would have to be shipped in from Japan(!) )
The Protective Gear:
- 2007 Profile Jacket & Pants by Acerbis (sand-colored to reduce heat)
- Koerta body armour by Acerbis
- Butt & hip pad by Acerbis
- Knee & Shin protector by Acerbis
- Impact Motocross-style boots by Acerbis (white “stormtrooper” style to reduce heat)
- Impact gloves by Acerbis (sand color)
- White Motocross helmet by O’Neal

The Clothing:
- Sun-protected and vented Under Armour tops (short and and long) and Under Armour synthetic underwear
- Two pairs of synthetic climbing pants (Prana and Mountain Hardware)
- One fake Mountain Hardware jacket bought at a Beijing market for $8 USD in 2005 (actually made out of Gore-Tex - amazing; though the zipper pull busted off sometime in May 2008)
- Highly vented and water-immersible running shoes - CC Cardrona’s by Adidas (only all-weather / high-heat running shoe I’ve ever seen that you can actually run in)
- Synthetic socks - 4 pairs of generic REI-brand ones that discolor pretty quickly
- 2 pairs of boardshorts, one pair of synthetic cargo shorts
- One pair of Rainbow sandals (still alive since senior year of college)
- One Cal t-shirt (Go Bears)
- One Springboks hooded sweatshirt (added in SA June 2008 - have to support the national rugby team of course)
The Accessories:
- Garmin 60CSX GPS - Waterproof and idiot-proof - loaded with Tracks4Africa overlander maps mounted on the bike using a RAM mount; spare micro-SD card bought in SA after other spare was left somewhere in San Francisco
- Asus eee solid-state laptop - tiny, lightweight, cheap ($400!), and highly durable
- Nikon D40x digital SLR camera with Nikon 18-55 and 70-200 vibration-reduction lenses
- Pentax Option S5 digital point-and-shoot (tiny and cheap - from Costco)
- LED Headlamp by Princeton - super-dorky but does the trick
- SOG Twitch XL tactical knife
- Panga from Parow Guns & Ammo - carried by Bellville’s finest (ok so only Capetonians will get the joke)
The Tools:
- 22mm spanner wrench - Stolen! Replaced with breaker bar, 1/2 and 3/4 inch drive sockets, stepup adapters, and 22, 24, 18, 19, and 23 mm sockets to replace all the odd-sized bolts on the wheels and spark plug (thanks Kawasaki - jerks)
- 1/4″ drive socket kit- 8mm, 10mm, 12mm
- Cheap swappable plastic screwdriver
- Small phillips flathead screwdriver (will work for both obviously)
- Set of allen keys (need have duplicates!)
- Two motorcycle tire levers (one big one small)
- Tire patch kit(s) - extra to spare
- Wire
- Multi-meter
- Needle-nose pliers
- 2 vice-grips - one round-nose, one needle-nose
- Spark plug tool
- Duct tape
- Electrical tape
- Dieletric grease
- Some other junk I can’t remember right now
The Kitchen:
- Various spices in a sealed plastic mini-jars
- MSR Internazionale camping stove (burns regular gasoline from the bike)
- Titanium lightweight cooking pot
- Light plastic silverware kit
- Cheap plastic plate
The Bedroom:
- Various Half-Dome 2 tent by REI - double-vestibules to keep dirty gear outside the tent
- Lightweight silk sleeping sheet
- Exped Synmat 9 (lightweight, compressible, pumps by foot, surprisingly comfortable)
The Hospital:
- A bunch of different OTC meds (Ibuprofen, paracetomol) and prescription painkillers (all the fun stuff)
- Enough vaccines received before leaving to kill a horse: Yellow fever, Hepatitis A/B, Tetanus, Diptheria, Meningitis, TB, Polio, Typhoid. Opted out of rabies (we’ll find out how bad an idea that was eventually)
- Anti-malarials (Lariam) - supposed to give you crazy nightmares - I’ll find out soon how bad
- Katadyn water bottle as primary water filtration system (both bacteria and particulate filtration)
- Silver nitrate water purification solution
- Iodine tablets as water filtration backup

When you get to malaria country, be sure to use the tent or other netting at night. What do you use for water purification?
