…If you’re riding an heavily overloaded motorcycle at 120 KPH at night in in the dark in deep gravel while being chased by feral dogs somewhere in southern Namibia, and you’re pretty sure you hit a bird at high speed that exploded all over the right side of your radiator, boot, and pant leg, but you don’t check until morning after you slept in your motorcycle gear because you were so exhausted and find feathers and bird guts everywhere, you probably did.
…And if you find a lone talon hanging off the rear cotter pin the next day, try not to puke.
It was pointed out to me in mid-June by a certain someone as I contemplated never leaving South Africa that if I was to actually embark on a a complete circumnavigation of Africa (or at least a north-to-south trip) that I would obviously have to start at the southernmost tip of Africa and head to the northernmost. Obviously. So I did - heading to Cape Agulhas (the second-most famous Cape in SA besides the Cape of Good Hope, which has the fancy name but not the southernly distinction), with Lise (no Holly)
Finally made it in to Namibia after waiting out the torrential rains in South Africa and being torn away only by my refugee status after overstaying my visa.
Which is payable by a fine that is double what I had though it was.
Oops.
Anyways I am now writing this from Keetmanshoop, Namibia:
So after much delay (2 weeks in South Africa has turned into 3 months), I am heading off tomorrow towards Namibia.
Now the fun begins - please stay tuned.
There are several basic rules for doing motorcycle repair on the road in Africa.
#1. Getting parts and tools on the road is a pain in the ass.
#2. Getting parts and tools on the road is a pain in the ass.
#3. See rules #1 and #2.
Having a decent place to work on the bike is often the least and the most you can do - a friend’s front yard doesn’t hurt either
Here’s a bike shot in said front yard minus the seat and side panels.
Check out the pictures page for more photos.
Update is relatively minor - have added some bike photos as well as Soweto photos and some additional photos in the Cape Town set.
I have also made some updates to the planned route, the current trip, and the gear.
Enjoy - more on the way shortly.
